A Day in Paradise: Exploring Darjeeling

We keep dreaming of taking a break from our busy lives but never really go ahead with those plans. My advice? Just take that leap and indulge with nature as much as you can as these short trips only revitalize you to take on the world with a newfound spirit. Last week, in a very impulsive manner, I decided to book a Darjeeling tour package and once I found a humble package to suit my budget, I set off on the tour the very next day! Here’s how my engrossing date with Darjeeling went.

A Sunrise Like Never Before!

Let’s make it very clear that I am not one of those people who wake up late and have never seen a real sunrise before so when they go on trips they get mesmerized by even the most common views that they see. I have always been a morning person and have seen a number of sunrises. So believe me when I say this- the sunrise I witnessed from the summit of Ghoom at the renowned Tiger Hill is the most beautiful sight I’ve ever seen!

So this is how it all began. I reached the Bagdogra Airport at night after which I spent the rest of the night at a hotel. My amazing Darjeeling tour began early in the morning when we headed to Tiger Hill which is located on the summit of Ghoom. With the peak of the magnanimous Kanchenjunga standing tall right before me and the glittering rays of the splendid morning sun piercing through it, the beauty of the place was indeed a sight to behold! I could not have asked for a better start to the day and with that beautiful view captured in my heart, we made our way to the next location.

Off We Go On A Spiritual Escapade

After the captivating sunrise, the next stop in my fascinating Darjeeling tour was at the Ghoom Monastery. One of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Darjeeling, the Yiga Choeling or the Ghoom Monastery is a masterpiece in its own right. The monastery is home to some of the oldest manuscripts that are believed to be the collection of Buddha. In addition to that, I was mesmerized to see the images of Buddha that looked extremely charming and brought about a strange sense of calm and composure to the premise.

The calmness also had a lot to do with the snow-capped peaks that surrounded the monastery and made the place look so surreal. From that high an altitude, I could see the glorious statue of the Maitreya Buddha and the spiral railway of the Batasia Loop along with the Darjeeling War Memorial that is situated right at the center of the Batasia Loop Garden. With a spiritually charged mind, body, and soul, we set out for the next destination.

Adventurous Spots That Marked The Day

After relishing a lip-smacking breakfast at the hotel, we went to explore other significant places to visit in Darjeeling. It began with a visit to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. The organization consists of a museum that has a vast collection of artifacts, works of literature, and paintings that give interesting insights into the adventurous world of mountaineering.

Next, we explored the Himalayan Zoological Park which inhabits exotic animals like the Tibetan Wolf and Red Panda. Visiting the zoo was an exciting experience for an animal-lover like me. The subsequent visit to the Tibetan Refugee Centre was another memorable episode as I got to witness the lives of the refugees and how they showed some excellent skills at their craftsmanship.

No excursion can end without a shopping spree at the local markets. I too had a great time exploring Mall Road which had quite an impressive collection of antiques, ethnic clothes, accessories, and paintings. After collecting some souvenirs from the market, my memorable tour to Darjeeling came to a gratifying end.

My takeaway from the tour was that no trip is too short. You can make the most of it if you plan things wisely and have the right kind of zest to make it work. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and get going!
