Lord Curzon described this destination as the ‘Venice of the East’ owing to its beaches, lagoons, picturesque canals and more. It is ideal because towards north, it connects Kumarkom with Cochin and towards south is Quilon. The name Alleppey or Alapphuza means land between seas where several rivers flow into the lake. The Alleppey Backwaters are famous the world over as a tourist attraction site in Kerala.

The rest of the day is spent at the visitor’s leisure and pleasure. One can choose to sightsee or any other independent activity.

Later on, you are taken for half day’s tour of Kumarakom. Overnight stay in Kumarakom.

Kochi is endowed with mainland Ernakulam, Bolgatty and Gundu Habor, islands of Willingdon, Mattencherry and Vypeen, and Fort Kochin. The link to these areas is bridges and ferry. The visitor proceeds on a sightseeing of the area, and gets the chance to see St. Francis Church which is considered the oldest European built church. It was put up by Franciscan Friars of Portuguese. Though originally wooden, it was later transformed into a stone structure in the 16th century. After Kochi was invaded by the British in 1795, it became the Anglican Church and is currently used by the church of South India.

Kochi also books a place in the history books for having been the first burial place of Vasco Da Gama for 14 years before the remains were transported to Lisbon. To date, his tombstone still exists in the church.

Another place to visit is Mattenchary Palace which was built by the Portuguese in 1555 before being presented to the raja of Kochi as a gesture of goodwill. Available are amazing side galleries with beautiful murals that depict scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranic legends.

Another place to visit is The Synagogue that was built by the Portuguese in 1568 before being destroyed in 1662. It was rebuilt two years later when the Dutch invaded Kochi. Some best features to see include hand painted willow floor tiles from China, an ornate gold pulpit inside the sanctuary and a balcony upstairs for women to worship as was the custom according to the Orthodox rites of the community.

There is age old Chinese fishing net fixed on the land for an unusual form of fishing also referred to as shore operated fishing nets.
